Get ready to hit up your local thrift stores, dollar stores, and even IKEA, because we're about to show you how to make your craft dreams a reality without emptying your wallet!

The Hunt for Hidden Gems: Thrift Store Treasures

One of our absolute favorite ways to find unique and affordable storage solutions is by exploring local thrift stores like The Arc, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and if you are in Corvallis on a Saturday, Brother's Hauling does a weekly sale every Saturday from 9-1.  Also, don't be afraid to check out your local Buy Nothing Groups or the Marketplace on Facebook. You'd be amazed at what you can find with a little patience and a keen eye! It's good for the budget and hey I mean this witch loves to keep things out of the landfill if I can.

1. Shelving Units & Bookcases

Looking for sturdy shelving? Thrift stores are a goldmine! We've found everything from small, decorative shelves perfect for displaying embellishments to larger bookcases that provide ample storage for fabric, yarn, or larger tools. Don't be afraid of a little wear and tear – a fresh coat of paint can work wonders!

2. Dressers & Cabinets

Old dressers can be repurposed into fantastic craft room storage. Remove some drawers, add baskets, or even paint the inside of the drawers for a pop of color. Cabinets, especially those with glass fronts, are perfect for showcasing your prettiest supplies while keeping dust at bay.

3. Baskets & Bins (Repurpose, Repurpose, Repurpose!)

From wicker baskets to vintage tins, thrift stores are overflowing with unique containers that can be repurposed for craft supply storage. Think outside the box: a bread box for ribbon, a tackle box for beads, or a vintage suitcase for fabric scraps.

Dollar Store Delights: Daiso, Five Below & Dollar Tree Hacks

When it comes to those smaller, everyday organization needs, Daiso and Dollar Tree are our go-to spots. You can stock up on so many essentials for just a few dollars!

1. Daiso: The Land of Cute & Functional

Daiso is a treasure trove of clever and adorable organization tools.

  • Clear Bins & Containers: Perfect for categorizing small items like buttons, beads, and findings. Their stackable designs are a space-saver!

  • Drawer Dividers: Keep your drawers tidy and prevent items from shifting around.

  • Small Baskets & Trays: Ideal for corralling washi tape, markers, or even small bottles of glitter.

  • Desk Organizers: Those multi-compartment organizers are amazing for pens, pencils, and craft knives.

Pro Tip: Check out the Kitchen and Bath section for small desk size garbage cans, jars, and desktop storage shelves

2. Dollar Tree: Everyday Essentials for a Buck!

You truly can't beat the Dollar Tree for basic, functional storage.

  • Plastic Bins & Totes: Stock up on these for bulkier items like rolls of vinyl, larger stamp sets, or even keeping works-in-progress together.

  • Pencil Cups & Caddies: Great for holding brushes, scissors, and other frequently used tools on your desk.

  • Storage Jars: Perfect for buttons, sequins, or even cotton balls and q-tips if you have a crafting beauty station.

  • Over-the-Door Organizers: Maximize vertical space by hanging one of these for rolls of wrapping paper, cutting mats, or even lightweight fabric.

Five Below: The Newest Budget Organization Destination!

Big news for our local friends! Five Below has officially made its Pacific Northwest debut, including a brand-new location at Cascade Plaza in Beaverton, Oregon that just opened late last year! This is a total game-changer for our "organization on a budget" mission.

While you might think of them for snacks and tech, their "Room" section is a goldmine for crafters. Here are the items we’re currently obsessed with for the craft room:

  •  The Multi-Compartment "Snackle Boxes": Originally for snacks, these clear, divided cases (often just $5) are the absolute best for sorting beads, buttons, and those tiny embellishments that always seem to get lost. They are slim enough to stack or tuck into a drawer.

  • Tiered Acrylic Beauty Organizers: Don't walk past the beauty aisle! Their tiered acrylic organizers—meant for lipstick or palettes—are perfect for holding washi tape rolls or ink pads. Being able to see every color at a glance makes a huge difference during a late-night crafting session.

  • Stackable Plastic Bins & "Book Bins": We found some fantastic interlocking book bins that are traditionally for classrooms. These are actually the perfect width for storing vinyl rolls upright. At around $3–$5, you can grab enough to line an entire shelf for a fraction of the price of "official" craft storage.

  • Desktop Caddies & Spinners: Five Below often carries rotating "lazy susan" style organizers for $5. These are amazing for the center of your craft table to hold your most-used tools: scissors, glue sticks, and pens.

Pro-Tip: If you’re heading to the new Beaverton location (or any of the new Washington spots like Puyallup or Vancouver), keep an eye out for their "Five Beyond" section. You can sometimes find larger rolling carts or small furniture pieces that are still incredibly affordable!

IKEA: Affordable Staples We Love

While IKEA might not be a "thrift store," their affordable and versatile storage solutions are definitely budget-friendly and worth mentioning for any craft room setup. I don't use a lot of these in my craft room but I know many crafters that can't live without them.

1. KALLAX Shelf Units

The KALLAX series is practically a craft room staple for a reason! They're incredibly versatile and can be used horizontally or vertically. Pair them with IKEA's storage inserts, or use your thrifted baskets for a custom look.

2. RÅSKOG Utility Cart

This little cart is a workhorse! It's perfect for holding supplies you need to move around your craft space, like paints, glues, or even a portable sewing machine.

3. TROFAST Storage Series

If you have a lot of smaller items, especially for kid-friendly crafts, the TROFAST series with its removable bins is fantastic. It makes clean-up a breeze!

Our Top Tips for Budget Craft Room Organization:

  • Declutter First: Before you buy anything, go through everything you own! Get rid of items you no longer use, are broken, or have multiples of.

  • Measure Your Space: Know the dimensions of your room and any areas you want to organize. This will prevent impulse buys that don't fit.

  • Shop with a List: It's easy to get sidetracked in thrift stores and dollar stores. Go in with a clear idea of what you're looking for.

  • Think Vertical: Walls are your friends! Use shelves, pegboards, and wall-mounted organizers to free up valuable desk space.

  • Repurpose & Upcycle: Look at everyday objects with fresh eyes. An old cutlery tray can become a ribbon organizer, or a clear shoe organizer can hold vinyl rolls.

We truly believe that an organized craft room doesn't have to cost a fortune. With a little creativity, some smart shopping, and a willingness to explore different stores, you can create a beautiful and functional space that inspires you every day!
